Search is on for Bark in the Park mascot
As a cat person, I have no dog in this fight, so to speak. But for dog owners, who love to talk about how their Fido or Lassie is so smart and wonderful, it's time to put the talk to the test.
The Humane Society of Missouri and PurinaONE dog food are sponsoring a contest to find a dog to represent St. Louis shelter pets at the 2012 Humane Society of Missouri Bark in the Park.
As the press release states, "If you think your furry friend is paws down the best dog on the block, submit a photo of you and your dog along with a 300 words or less testimonial telling the Humane Society why your dog is special and how he/she has helped your family through a "ruff" spot or overcome a great obstacle."
All this can be done at http://hsmo.org/bark . The deadline is midnight, Jan. 15.
The selected pooch will lead the dog walk and have his or her picture on the event materials. And if the glory isn't enough, the "Bark Mascot" will get a year's supply of Purina ONE dog food.
Although I can think of a few yappers that couldn't meet the entrance requirements, most can: The dogs "should be spayed or neutered. They should have good manners with people and with other dogs. They should enjoy walking on a leash and should be comfortable and calm in new situations."
The Bark in the Park folks will select three finalists and the public will select the winner. To spread the honor, another five runners-up will get their photos on the website and will be up with the big dog at the May 19 event in Forest Park.
Oh, and you can also go to the website and learn about participating in the walk, the biggest fundraiser for the Missouri Humane Society.
