A trio of operas, from Cosi Fan Tutte to Alice in Wonderland

In Out & About

8:38 am on Wed, 06.20.12

Beyond their legendary status, English author Lewis Carrol and German composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart do not have too much in common. Yet both will have their classic works performed on the stage by the Opera Theater of St. Louis this weekend.

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Cosi Fan Tutte" will play this weekend, along with "Carmen" and "Sweeney Todd." The four shows will all make their home at the Loretto-Hilton Center at Webster University, playing back-to-back nights in a series that tempts viewers to dedicate a whole weekend.

The operas vary in age -- "Cosi Fan Tutte" was first performed in the 18th century, "Alice" in 2007 -- and subject matter, from "Carmen's" lovestruck soldier to "Sweeney Todd's" murderous, vengeful barber.

A different type of musical theater is underway in Forest Park, as the Muny presents "Thoroughly Modern Millie" this week, followed by "Chicago." And that's not all.
