The Muny plays a plundering of Gilbert and Sullivan
The musical "Pirates! (or, Gilbert & Sullivan Plunder'd)" is a plundering of sorts. The show, at the outdoor Muny, is an update on musical masterminds W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's comic opera "Pirates of Penzance," giving a contemporary edge to the 100+ year old original.

The adaptation by Nell Benjamin, John McDaniel and Gordon Greenberg premiered in Connecticut only three years ago, reintroducing a new generation to a musical that still enjoys decent exposure. Their updates have been received with mixed reviews from critics, but most laud the production's adherence to the essence of the Gilbert & Sullivan eye for social and political satire. Original fans will have a chance to pick the play apart and decide for themselves through Sunday, Aug. 5.
Also coming up, the Galilee Circus, a joint Arab-Israeli youth circus, will perform at the City Museum, Alton's Little Theatre stages "Bye Bye Birdie" and Stray Dog Theatre debuts its rendition of The Great American Trailer Park Musical, a musical about, yes, a trailer park.
