Big money didn't lose

In Commentary

7:21 am on Tue, 11.27.12

By keeping candidates in the race, money helps those politicians push their message longer, and to win more support for it even if that support doesn’t translate into victory. Thus, money moves the agenda.

Putting Obama election numbers in context

In Commentary

7:07 am on Wed, 11.14.12

Efforts to downplay the president's re-election fail to place it in the context of the times and of presidential elections more generally. When those factors are considered, including the tanking economy Obama inherited, Tuesday’s election represents authorization to move in a direction generally consistent with his programs.

Former Republican explains what he needs to return

In Commentary

7:39 am on Tue, 11.13.12

What about supporting a real Fix the Debt movement? Stop calling everyone in a high tax bracket “a job creator.” Tell Rove to take his money and donate it to a charity. Religious belief is to be applauded, not worn on your sleeve. Stop pandering.

Get things done and support those in need

In Commentary

7:52 am on Wed, 10.31.12

Missouri’s sterling AAA credit rating is intact, unemployment is down, and more Missourians are going on to college than ever before. We need to continue to keep our state on a fiscally sustainable path, invest in our students and workers, and create a climate where businesses of all sizes can grow.

Government needs to get out of the way

In Commentary

7:50 am on Wed, 10.31.12

While quality-manufacturing jobs were evaporating across the country, I found the formula to break that trend and help provide a good living for hundreds of Missourians. With my jobs plan we can repair the damage that has been done.

Connect small businessowners with resources

In Commentary

12:59 am on Mon, 10.29.12

The most important issue any statewide officeholder can take on right now is helping to create jobs and grow Missouri businesses. I plan to champion legislation to make the process of starting and renewing small businesses in Missouri easier.

Implement photo ID for elections

In Commentary

12:59 am on Mon, 10.29.12

Our voting system is antique and wide open to election fraud. As secretary of state, I will make honest and most trustworthy elections my top priority. It is easy to provide free IDs to people who lack a driver’s license.

The 'free' Zoo

In Commentary

7:51 am on Tue, 05.22.12

When a family of four goes to the St. Louis Zoo, they can be forgiven for not knowing it will cost them $60, $72 if they park. If they can't pay, the alternative is to tell the kids they can't do what kids do at the zoo.

In World

Fifty years ago this week, President John F. Kennedy confronted Cold War tensions in Wall-divided Berlin and bolstered the confidence of its beleaguered residents by telling them, "Ich bin ein Berliner." On Wednesday, President Barack Obama will face eastward from the Brandenburg Gate for the latest address of an American president in the city that has been a flashpoint of East-West relations.

12:42 am on Tue, 06.18.13

Duff's, a mainstay of the Central West End since Karen Duffy opened it in 1972, is closing its doors this month. Over the years, Duff's developed a reputation for reasonably priced, imaginative menus and a good selection of wines. But what made Duff's invaluable were the poetry readings on Monday evenings.

Bosley right to put child first - but not to ask others to pay

In Commentary

12:39 am on Tue, 06.18.13

Asking for contributions for a child’s college education is legal in Missouri. But not right. Because a parent should help his or her children in almost any way they can,  such obligations must be kept far away from a politician’s public responsibilities — it is not hard to figure out which one would lose if they conflicted.

Blind fear: Combating terror with eyes wide shut

In Commentary

7:00 am on Thu, 06.13.13

It turns out that the Obama administration has been conducting its own variation of electronic surveillance that the Bush administrated. The problem is not the need to combat terrorism, but the blanket invasion of privacy and the revelation of who the people are who have access to our secrets.
