The Leadership Conference of Women Religious, made up of the elected leaders of 80 percent of the 57,000 U.S. Catholic sisters, has been under Vatican scrutiny for allegations that it is out of step with Vatican teachings. The group just received the Herbert Haag Prize for 2013 for Freedom in the Church.
The day after its annual meeting concluded, the board of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious met with Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain. He has been assigned to oversee Vatican-mandated reforms. They plan to meet again in the fall.
“Religious life, as it is lived by the women religious who comprise LCWR, is an authentic expression of this life that must not be compromised,” said the president of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. A team will meet tomorrow with the Vatican representative.
